“The Indian government has rolled out a new poultry farming subsidy scheme for SC farmers, offering up to ₹3 lakh in financial aid to boost rural entrepreneurship. Launched under the National Livestock Mission, the initiative aims to enhance poultry production, create jobs, and uplift marginalized communities through low-interest loans and substantial subsidies.”

Government Unveils Poultry Farming Subsidy for SC Farmers

In a significant push towards empowering marginalized communities and boosting rural economies, the Indian government, through the Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, has introduced a new poultry farming subsidy scheme specifically targeting Scheduled Caste (SC) farmers. Launched on June 6, 2025, under the National Livestock Mission (NLM), the scheme offers financial assistance of up to ₹3 lakh to eligible SC farmers to establish or expand poultry farming ventures. This initiative is designed to promote self-employment, enhance domestic poultry production, and strengthen rural livelihoods.

The scheme, implemented in collaboration with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and various state governments, provides a subsidy covering 25% to 50% of the project cost, depending on the scale of the poultry unit and the applicant’s eligibility. For small and marginal SC farmers, particularly those in Below Poverty Line (BPL) categories, the subsidy can significantly reduce the financial burden of starting a poultry business. Loans under the scheme are facilitated through Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), Cooperative Banks, and other NABARD-supported financial institutions, with interest rates kept low to ensure affordability.

A key feature of the scheme is its focus on inclusivity. Priority is given to landless farm laborers, small landholders, widows, and individuals from economically weaker sections within the SC community. The financial aid covers critical expenses such as purchasing high-quality poultry breeds, constructing sheds, procuring feed, and ensuring vaccinations and insurance for livestock. For instance, a typical poultry unit costing ₹6 lakh could receive a subsidy of up to ₹3 lakh, with the remaining amount covered through low-interest loans.

The Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has allocated ₹500 crore for the 2025-26 financial year to support this initiative. States like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and West Bengal, known for their robust poultry sectors, are expected to lead in disbursing these subsidies. The scheme also integrates with Gram Panchayat-led initiatives to provide training and technical support to first-time farmers, ensuring sustainable farming practices and better farm management.

Officials from the Animal Husbandry Department emphasized that the scheme aligns with the government’s broader goal of doubling farmers’ income by promoting agribusiness. “Poultry farming is a low-investment, high-return venture that can transform the lives of SC farmers,” said Devendra Kumar Pandey, Special Secretary, Animal Husbandry Department. “By providing financial and technical support, we aim to create a new generation of rural entrepreneurs.”

To apply, eligible SC farmers must submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlining the financial and technical aspects of their poultry venture to a partner bank. Required documents include KYC details, proof of caste, and land ownership (if applicable). Upon approval, the subsidy is credited directly to the loan account, reducing the repayment burden. Farmers are encouraged to contact their nearest RRB or Animal Husbandry Office for detailed guidelines and application procedures.

The scheme has been hailed by agricultural experts as a game-changer for SC communities, particularly in rural areas where employment opportunities are limited. With India’s poultry sector witnessing a surge in demand for eggs and meat, the initiative is expected to not only improve livelihoods but also contribute to food security and economic growth.
