On June 4, 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government launched the Mukhyamantri Digital Education Yojana, a transformative initiative to modernize school education through digital infrastructure. With a budget of ₹325 crore, the scheme aims to establish over 2,700 smart classrooms across the state, of which 1,780 are already operational. The program, spearheaded by the Urban Development Department, seeks to bridge the digital divide and equip students with 21st-century skills.
Under the Aspirational Cities Programme, 913 smart classrooms have been sanctioned at a cost of ₹30 crore, while the CM Abhyudaya Composite School Scheme supports 25 specialized classrooms. Additionally, 13 classrooms have been approved under the Vaishvik Nagaroday Yojana. These smart classrooms are equipped with interactive digital boards, high-speed internet, and e-learning modules to facilitate innovative teaching methods.
The initiative prioritizes both urban and rural schools, ensuring equitable access to technology. It includes teacher training programs to enhance digital literacy and integrate technology into pedagogy effectively. The government aims to improve learning outcomes, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects, preparing students for a competitive global landscape.
Officials stated that the scheme aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, emphasizing technology-driven education. By fostering interactive and engaging learning environments, the Yojana seeks to reduce dropout rates and enhance student participation. The government plans to expand the initiative to cover more schools in the 2026-27 academic year, with a focus on underserved regions.
